Figure Ground is an experienced artist led organisation working within the public realm.
We focus on artist development through collaborative practice and engaged debate.
Figure Ground is comprised of a mix of professional creative backgrounds that represent a wide range of artistic practices and skills.
We promote the artists voice within the commissioning process and represent a large network of artists working across the southeast of england.
FigureGround uses creative processes to start conversations, collaborations and projects.
We are building a unique knowledge network, growing and legitimising a new type of public realm practice.
Initially supported by NAN, we commissioned a series of short residencies across the South East of England. These residencies gave artists the opportunity to collaborate, develop work site specifically and participate in a debate about the future possibilities of public art.
Throughout 2011-12, we worked on ‘Track Changes’, an Arts Council England funded research and organisational development project. As part of this project we invited a number of public realm organisations to debate, share ideologies and build networks with us. These organisations include Artangel, Banner Repeater, Fernymwoods Contemporary, PlaCE (UWE), Stour Space, LV21, and Medway Council (INSITE project).
We also produced an artists residency onboard the LV21, a lightship moored on Gillingham Pier.
From 2014-15 we worked on the ‘Public Art Road Trip’ project also funded by Arts Council England.
Figure Ground members are: Katy Beinart, Jack Brown, Laura Krikke, and Jo Thomas. Current Projects are lead by Katy, Jack, and Jo.
